Open Sewing Studio Goals & Things:

  • Dedicated time for sewing projects with guidance from Mel Martinez, owner and sewist behind Aqua Underwear, in Make Salt Lake’s Textile Lab (aka sewing lab)

  • Work on undie projects, trouble shoot fit issues, try out modifications

  • Work on any sewing project —Mel’s niche is knitwear, but all sewing projects welcome

  • Copy Aqua Underwear patterns to keep and/or collect supplies to make more undies at home

  • Ask your lingering sewing, knitwear and undie questions

  • Get suggestions for buying your own fabric, patterns, supplies etc.

  • Give us feedback or suggestions IRL about the workshop you attended or workshops you want!

Structure & Supplies

There won't be any formal teaching/instruction. Students will work independently. Though Mel will be there to happily offer guidance, provide information, and answer questions. They’ll bring patterns, pattern paper, fabric, and sewing supplies for everyone to use. You’re welcome to copy any patterns we have. The Make SLC Textile Lab has sewing machines, sergers/coverstich machines, cutting tables, cutting mats and some general sewing supplies. We’ll have fabric and waistband elastic for purchase.

Who is this for?

While this is primarily for previous Undie Making Workshop students to continue their undie projects —anyone who can work mostly self-guided is welcome. If you haven’t taken an Aqua Underwear Undie Making workshop but have knitwear experience and your own project to work on; can figure out how to make undies with the provided materials; or friend/former student to guide you in making undies, you’re more than welcome to sign up!

Workshop Fee & Refund Policy:

  • In addition to the $20 fee, fabric will be $6/underwear, and waistband elastic $2/underwear, if needed. Payment via Venmo, PayPal, cash or card at the open studio.

  • We’re unfortunately out of workshop funding, so your Open Studio fee is non-refundable. The fee covers the rental space and compensates the instructor. If enough people sign up, a couple sliding scale fees can be offered —please inquire.
